    Los Altos Community Foundation (LACF) offers philanthropic and volunteer services that enable local residents and businesses to improve our community and address its needs. Through LACF, community members can “pool” their financial resources and talent to accomplish much more than any one individual could do alone. The Foundation serves Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, and Mountain View.

    LACF services include:

    • Grantmaking. LACF has granted over $1.4 million to local community non-profits through its re-granting partnerships with the David and Lucille Packard and Heising-Simons Foundations.
    • Donor Advised, Scholarship, Designated, and Field of Interest funds. Anybody can set up a tax-deductible fund for supporting nonprofits and causes. Over $6 million has been granted from LACF’s funds.
    • Programs. LACF operates philanthropy, community building, and civic leadership programs for youth and adults wanting to contribute to the community.
    • Nonprofit incubation. LACF enables local residents to easily start and grow a nonprofit to address community needs through its fiscal sponsorship service.
    • Convening. LACF brings together local groups and individuals to address community issues and opportunities.

    The Los Altos Senior Program has grown into a second location: Not only does the Hillview Community Center continue to serve as a popular gathering place for many of Los Altos’ residents and neighboring areas for over twenty-five years, but a second location has opened at Grant Park in the Multi-Purpose Room.

    Different events take place at each of the locations, so check with the office to make sure of exact location. Events include super screen movies, speakers and lunches (including birthday lunches). Bridge play is each week Tuesdays through Thursdays, with over nine hours of playing time and weekly bridge lessons offered year round. The Senior Center Library has hardbound and paperback books plus videos. Other activities include mah jongg, shuffleboard, line dancing, ping pong, pinochle, poker, book club, ArtVentures, bocce ball and Wii play. Bocce ball courts are available for rent throughout the year. The Los Altos Senior Program also offers travel for seniors, with one-day and extended distance trips. 

    Mountain View-Los Altos Adult Education classes take place in rooms adjacent to the Los Altos Senior Program’s location at Hillview Community Center. Students enjoy class breaks in Room 10, at the Senior Center, where we serve a nice assortment of cookies, tea and coffee, along with excellent socialization. Adult Ed classes vary but often include Tai Chi, French/Spanish, Oil/Acrylic Painting, Japanese Flower Arrangement, Ikebana; Memoir Writing, International Relations.     Resources available through the Senior Program: AARP Tax Assistance, HICAP Insurance Counseling, AARP 55 Alive Mature driving classes, Notary, and CSA (Community Services Agency) services and counseling for seniors in need.

    Sponsored by the Los Altos Recreation & Community Services Department, the Los Altos Senior Program has over 100 active volunteers and over 300 active members. The monthly Spotlight newsletter is available at both of the Senior Program’s locations, or can be mailed to your home for $6 per year. Annual Membership is $26 for Los Altos residents, $40 for all others.

    Caring & Commitment in Action
    Member volunteers are welcome year round including an Assisteens®
    Auxiliary for teens grades 7-12.

    Assistance League's Costume Bank is the Chapter’s full time fundraiser. Renting over 3,000 theater quality costumes & accessories. Members volunteer over 15,000 hours annually touching many lives through philanthropic programs. Over 90% of funds raised are used to benefit the local community.

    Philanthropic Programs:
    HOME Apartments:  Affordable temporary housing for patients and their families while being treated at Stanford Health Care
    Operation School Bell®: Backpack care kits containing immediate needs to transitioning "high-risk" teenagers in abusive situations. In partnership with Santa Clara Co. RAIC Project.
    Foster Care Enriching lives of youth in foster care and parenting education in partnership with Uplift Family Services Foster Care and Adoption.
    Baby Bundles: Supplying clothing, homemade blankets, diapers & equipment to babies in need through Santa Clara Co. Public Health Dept. Nurse Family Partnership Program.
    Hug-A-Bear: Teddy Bears distributed within the MCAH & CHDP Programs of Santa Clara Co Public Health Dept. to children in crisis.

    The Municipal Volunteer Program (MVP) partners with caring and giving community members to provide an opportunity to serve residents while also contributing to the excellent service for which the City of Los Altos is known. By choosing to volunteer, you will have the opportunity to strengthen our great city by connecting with families, neighbors, and communities through service.
